Many greetings from Loliondo. I hope that all of you are well and again I hope that you have a wonderful Christmas filled with peace and blessings. I wish all of you the best of luck and happiness through out the new year 2012

All of us here in Loliondo are fine and we thanks God because the rains has washed all over Ngorongoro District and the long dry season has come to an end.

On behalf of Kidupo organization I would like to take this opportunity to convey our sincere and heartfelt thanks to all of our sponsors and friends through Mama Sara organization in Norway for your prayers, financial, materials and moral support. I thanks all of you for your tremendous support for our needy children and youth who are schooling because of your generous support.

Thanks for caring. Thanks for your thoughtfulness. I pray that you are blessed as you each in your own way have blessed the Maasai people by your concern.

I would also like to share with you a word about the performance of Mama Sara organization and Kidupo organization, hence some of our achievements are:

SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM.

Till now the sponsors have been recruited by Mama Sara organization in Norway and the organization has given priority to supporting youth in Secondary school ( 6 -years). This implies, a youth in lower secondary school four year form I – IV and youth in upper secondary school form V – VI. Finally the organization is supporting primary school children. The sponsee students are 73 in total as from january 2012. All of them will be in school this month because of your support.

The main objective of Mama Sara organization is to enable the Maasai children and youth form disadvantaged families to access secondary and college education in the country. The sponsorship program is to address the problems of youth failing to pay school fees, uniforms shoes, mattress, sheet, blanket, e.t.c, from poor families who have passed their exams and are lacking funds to continue with their education.

Kidupo has the strategy which implies a criteria of selecting the needy students to be sponsored by Mama Sara organization sponsors hence, Election of students is done by the village leaders, Kidupo education committee, and Mama Sara organization coordinator. The support money is only spent on education for student use only.

TEACHER’S TRANING PROGRAM

The program started last year 2011 after the construction of two class rooms and office at Lopolun village in Loliondo area. In our District of Ngorongoro we are experiencing the big shortages of teachers among the other things.

Because of this, to have a plan for future Teachers for our school was a priority of both organization. Currently 3 Teachers are there in our school and 100 children are enrolled and attending classes comfortably. I thanks Saami Teachers training college for sponsoring 3 students who are now in the college for training after which they will sign a contract to teach in our school. On behalf of the school I request you to continue to support this program because you are doing a wonderful job to us and really you will make a big difference in our beloved school and in our community. I believe that through education people can be able to fight independently for their right and better livelihoods

SCHOOL BUILDING PROGRAM

Historically, Lopolun village is among the new village in our District and according to the policy of the ministry of education and vocational Training the policy direct each village to built its own primary school but the village of Lopolun were not able to do so. Also, the villagers are the members of Kidupo and they approached Kidupo for possible support and Kidupo too quested Mama Sara organization to source funds for that end.

Both organizations are running the program in the approach of cost sharing method – a joint program so far two class rooms and office are completed and more than 100 children are attending the school. Three Teachers from the government are there in our school. Two in one Teacher housing is not yet completed.

I give special thanks to the Saami children for their contributions which enable the construction of the two class room and teacher office to be completed. Also their fund spend on the construction of two in one teachers housing which is not completed – more fund is still needed for the completion of this house.

DEVELOPMENT GROUPS PROGRAM

Women and youth development groups have been organized by Kidupo whereby the organization managed to form 8 groups in Kidupo operational villages. These groups need to be empowered both educationally and economically.

HIV/AIDS PROGRAM

HIV/AIDS are taboo among the Maasai community and the information campaigns held in Tanzania have not reached the Maasai people in Loliondo efficiently and effectively. This is important for both children and youth. It is really a big challenge for both organization. I am aware that, Mama Sara organization has approached NAROD for possible support several times without success we don’t know why. But I request our pattern organization in Norway to continue to make an application to NORAD without giving up.

Before concluding, I consider it is my duty to thanks all the Board members of Mama Sara organization, sponsors, Friend, and the Saami children for their generous support to our children, youths and school building project.

Also, I thanks the Board members, sponsors and Friends who have be visited us several times in Loliondo and I want to assure them all that their visit to Loliondo is extremely appreciated, encouraging, rewarding and enriching to all of us.

Again, I take this opportunity to place on record the appreciation of the work done by the founder and Administrator of Mama Sara organization because without her effort our children, youth and school building program could not be possible. KIDUPO – COORDINATOR.

Årsmøte i Mama Sara Education Foundation 13. Januar 2012 på Thon hotellet kl. 19:30. Vi ønsker de som har anledning, velkommen til årsmøte, det blir styre møte i forkant.

Skolebygg:

Vi begynner det nyet året i håp om å få støtte til vårt skolebygg prosjekt for Maasai barn i Loliondo. Vi har hatt flere innsamlinger, Skabmacuovggas, Alta siida  og Barnehage, Kulturskolen i Karasjok og Anna Jensen, Alta River Camp, for å nevne de største givere. Ellers har masse private personer støttet oss gjennom det siste året og vi har snart nok (halvparten av kostnad til hele bygget) til å begynne å bygge skolebygg nr. 2  for 3. og 4. klasse. Vi vil fortsette med innsamlinger for å få nok til hele bygning. Bygging av lærer boliger foregår nå, maasaiene har også selv samlet inn penger.

I 2012 vil 73 barn og unge få anledning til å begynne på skolen, mest ungdomskole og videregående skole. På vår skole i Loliondo går det for tiden 112 barn, det er bare helt fantastisk, disse betaler vi ikke skolepenger for. Med et skolebygg har så masse barn fått anledning til å gå på skole og å bo hjemme i landsbyen.

Sponsor reise til Loliondo i 2012:

Vi starter årets sponsor reise fra Alta 9. mars med overnatting i Oslo og 06:30 avgang med KLM via Amsterdam til Kilimanjaro Int. flyplass og byen Arusha. Vi blir i Arusha i 2 netter, vi ankommer lørdagskveld og søndag har vi som vanlig lunsj med alle de barn og unge som går på skolen i Arusha og omegn. Mandag morgen reiser vi videre med leiebiler gjennom Ngorongoro og Serengeti til Loliondo med retur slutten av uka til Arusha. Noen velger en uke, andre to-tre uker for å få anledning til å være ved sjøen og varmen og velger Zanzibar i stedet for Dar es Salaam.

Er det noen som ønsker å være med på denne spesielle turen for å møte sine sponsorbarn og unge, er det bare å ta kontakt.

Bygging av lærerboligkomplekset fortsetter, men går ikke så fort frem når man mangler penger. Vi samler inn penger til skolebygg nr. 2, hadde planer om å sette i gang med bygging når vi fikk inn halvparten av kr 170.000.- foreløpig har vi bare litt over 40.000.-.

Dear Mama Sara;

Many greetings from Loliondo. I would like to answer some  of your questions as follows:

I have already informed you that the first map of the teacher?s house -12 rooms was changed by the district engineer due to the the government new guidelines (2011) which ordered that all two-in-one teachers  houses in Tanzania should have 16 rooms.

I will enclose a true copy of the new map of the house plus the pictures of which I do believe that you will know where we are now. The first stage of the building is almost finished and our building adviser can make an interpretation of the map and the pictures of the house (Very Big House).

Concerning teacher?s house, two families can live comfortably in the house. Also the house can retain 6 single teachers depending on gender. Right now 3 teachers are present in our school (Two female and one male) due to the number of students who are  112. The solar system is working properly.

Bestemor Namano Terekenuo (96) er glad for at den første masai-urfolksskolen nå er åpnet. Hun benyttet åpningsfesten til å ordne skoleplass til sitt barnebarn.

De fleste masaiene i Tanzania lever i fattigdom og de har ikke råd til å betale for skoleplass til barna sine.

Noen barn er foreldreløse eller så har de foreldre som er så rammet av sykdom at de ikke klarer å ta vare på sine egne barn.

66 år gamle Gunhild Berit Sara Buljo fra Kautokeino står bak den samiske hjelpeorganisasjonen Mama Sara.

Hjelpeorganisasjonen Mama Sara har samlet inn 200.000 kroner til en egen skole for masaiene i Loliondo, en landsby i distriktet Ngorongoro i regionen Arusha i Tanzania. Landsbyen er en del av Serengeti nasjonalpark, kjent for sitt rike dyreliv og store savanner.

På torsdag var det klart for en høytidlig åpning av skolen.

Mer enn 300 mennesker var samlet til torsdagens høytidlige åpning av skolen, som skal gi et undervisningstilbud til 33 første- og andreklassinger. Skolen har to fastansatte lærere og et skoleår koster rundt 600 kroner per barn.

Fem år gamle Namano Terekenuo var i utgangspunktet ikke blant de som hadde fått skoleplass, noe både han og hans bestemor syntes var veldig trist.

Etter den flere timer lange åpningsseremonie benyttet Namano Terekenuo (96) anledningen til å snakke med Gunhild Berit Sara Buljo, som blant masaine bare går under navnet Mama Sara. Terekenyo ba pent om at hennes barnebarn skolle få skoleplass, og gleden var stor da Mama Sara svarte ja.

– Den lille gutten fortjener en skoleplass. Det er nettopp slike barn vi skal hjelpe, sier Gunhild Berit Sara Buljo til NRK Sápmi.

Mama Sara Education Foundation for Maasai school children (Mama Sara) søkte Norad om rundt en million kroner i støtte til skoleprosjektet.

Pengene var ment å gå til et treårig prosjekt for å bygge grunnskole og videregåendeskole, for masaiene i Ngorongoro-distriktet i Loliondo, Tanzania.

15. februar i år kom avslaget fra Norad. Mama Sara får ingen støtte til prosjektet sitt. Til tross for avslaget valgte Gunhild Berit Sara Buljo å gjennomføre skoleåpningen som planlagt.

Det er store forventninger blant masaiene etter at skolen nå er åpnet. Også sentrale og regionale myndigheter håper at dette bare er begynnelsen til noe stort når det gjelder utdanning av urfolkene i Arusha-regionen.

– Fylkesmannen i Arusha sa til meg at han håper at Mama Sara ikke nøyer seg med å bare bygge opp grunnskolen, men at organisasjonen også bygger både en videregående skole og et universitet. Jeg må si at det er litt av noen forventninger de har, men slik er det bare, fastslår Gunhild Berit Sara Buljo.

Bistandsgünderen sier at det riktige nå er å bygge alt sten for sten, og å håpe på at det finnes penger for å utvikle hele prosjektet.

– Vi må bare være sterke i troen på at vi får penger et eller annet sted, sier Gunhild Berit Sara Buljo.

66-åringen håper på å kunne fortsette med bistandsprosjektet sitt i flere år fremover.

– Så lenge helsa holder, vil jeg fortsette. Masaiene har nemlig store forventninger til meg og de har selv bedt om at Mama Sara skal fortsette. Da får jeg bare håpe et jeg har krefter til å fortsette med dette arbeidet, håper Gunhild Berit Sara Buljo.

Kjære sponsorer, det er litt over en uke siden vi kom hjem, var helt ”slått ut” i flere dager etter turen, men nå er alt normalt igjen. De av dere som har hatt muligheter til å se NRKsamiradio TV nyheter,  har fått ta del i en vellykket åpnings seremoni av den første skolen. Vi har hatt en fantastisk tur på alle måter, godt mottatt og travelt. Maasaiene er veldig takknemlig og de har store forventninger til oss. Ifølge vår rådgiver i byggeprosjektet Gunnar Lind fra Botenhamn, er Mama Sara Lopolun Primary School en av de beste han har sett i Tanzania av ca 150 skoler. Da skal vi være meget fornøyd, uten vår rådgiver, som selv har vært med å bygge fire skoler i sør Tanzania, hadde det vært vanskelig å fortsette. Ingen av oss har bygge kompetanse, alt må fraktes fra storbyen Arusha gjennom Serengeti til Loliondo.

Utdanningsministeriet har allerede ansatt to lærere som også var på plass under åpningen. Fylkesmannen for Ngorongoro Distriktet var Æresgjest og i tillegg var Utdanningsministeriet representert på åpnings seremonien. Vår samarbeidspartner KIDUPO har hatt et godt samarbeid med myndighetene i Loliondo, det har nok hjulpet mye.

Vi fikk møte de fleste barn og unge, men mange av de går på skolen i forskjellige byer og landsbyer som er langt fra Arusha og Loliondo. Vi møtte også en del av våre ex-studenter som vi satte pris på.

Vi har begynt med rekruttering av nye sponsorer for 2012, denne gang tar vi ikke nye grunnskolebarn, vi tar par års pause for å få ungdommene inn på ungdomsskole og videregående. Over 30 barn er allerede b egynt på vår nye skole 1. og 2. klassinger, disse slipper å bli sendt til storbyen lang hjemmefra.

Skolebygging vil fortsette etter hvert som vi får nok penger. Vi hadde jo søkt Norad om støtte til et tre års prosjekt for å fullføre grunnskolen og videregående. Vi fikk avslag på vår søknad som vi har anket, da får vi se hva skjer.

Maasaiene hadde penge innsamling på åpningsdagen til å bygge lærerbolig, ”two in one”, altså to leiligheter. Vi hadde jo planlagt å bygge denne, men har ikke nok penger. Vi er glad for at maasaiene selv satte i gang innsamling, det kom inn ca NOK 8-9.000.-., over 2 mill i tzs. Ikke verst.
